The stronger you are before surgery, the stronger you’ll be after.
That’s the philosophy behind prehabilitation (or “prehab”), the process of improving strength and functional capacity before surgery through a comprehensive and targeted exercise program – a process overseen by a physical therapist from OnSite Physio.
The goal of prehabilitation is to prepare the body for the stresses of the surgeries and procedures themselves while also preparing patients for life after surgery, helping lead to a more rapid recovery.
Research has shown a prehabilitation program can help patients not only recovery quicker, but save money along the way. According to one study published in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (2013), physical therapist-led prehab programs:
A physical therapist will customize your prehabilitation program based on your individual needs, conditions, medical history and treatment path.
A typical prehabilitation program may include warm-ups, cardiovascular exercise, resistance treatment, and an emphasis on flexibility and practicing functional tasks.
It also provides our physical therapists an opportunity to prepare you for the mental aspect of post-operative or post-treatment rehab, educating you about what to expect immediately after the procedure and coaching you on exercises you will need to know during the rehab process.
And, because we’re OnSite Physio, you don’t have to leave your home to begin your prehab program. We’ll come to you!
